CEGfi8: Yogic Breathing for Mental Wellness

The world is replete with mental health issues. Breathing helps. Rooted in the ancient practices of Pranayama, yogic breathing can lead to healthier and happier lives.

We are fortunate to have Vairavan Ramanathan from CEG ECE 94 to guide us. He is a certified yoga teacher. He has been practicing Yoga tantra and meditation for over 25 years. Professionally he works as the Director, Head of Trade Transformation Asia Pacific, Bank of America, Singapore. He is also an active volunteer with Brahms Centre (mindfulness and mental wellness NGO) in Singapore; he assists people from different walks of life with mental wellness.

In this session held on Nov 17th at 6 PM PST / Nov 18th at 7:30 AM IST, we learned the background and science behind Pranayama practices. We got a deeper understanding of the Oxygen / Carbon dioxide balance inside the body that helps shape a healthy life. Using the Yogic breathing techniques, one can maintain and enhance the balance. He connected biochemistry to physiology and mental health. In the later part, Vairavan led a practice session introducing a handful of techniques including Kapalabathi, Ujjal ocean wave breathing, AUM chanting, etc.
